131. William Francis,Jr ZUMBRUN
He was a toll station keeper along the Baltimore Pike at Pleasant Hill,
PA.
He collected money from travelers on Rt 30 traveling between York and
Manchester. He was also deputy of the Pleasant Hill township. He enlisted
as a substitute as a private in Co. H. 50th Pennsylvania Regiment at the
age of 18 years old. He was paid $700 to substitute for another person
who was drafted. He served for only several months between Mar. 13 1865
through July 5 1865. The Civil War was essentially over at this time. He
deserted on July 5, 1865.He owned the Federal Government $51 for the
loss of one gun sling and one wiper and a total of $26.33 for time not
served. There is no record of discipline that William received for
deserting. He did of brights disease/kidney failure
Champ Orrell Zumbrun has a picture of the Toll House at Pleasant Hill
which was razed around 1985.
She died on a kitchen table at the tool house with hemroid problems.
